Press Release: AKJU 47th Ohio State Karate & JuJitsu Championship

AKRON, Ohio – In March, students from Zahand’s Martial Arts, located on Akron Peninsula Road, represented their Dojo at the AKJU 47th Ohio State Karate & JuJitsu Championship in Chillicothe.  Students competed in two core areas of Karate and JuJitsu, Kata and Kumite. For performance in Kata, five first place trophies, eight second place trophies and five third place trophies were awarded to competitors from Zahand’s. One first and two second place trophies were awarded in Synchronized Kata, and students earned one first and one second place trophy in Weapons Kata.

Six first, seven second and five third place trophies were earned in Kumite. A second place trophy was awarded in Randori. A sword was awarded to Women’s Grand Kumite Champion, Zahand’s student Courtney Montecalvo, who also earned first place trophies in Grappling and Randori and second place trophies in Kata and Weapons Kata. Additional individual results are as follows: Ellen Dieterich 3rd in Kata, 1st in Kumite and Synchronized Kata; Douglas Skaggs 3rd Kumite; Johanna Skaggs – 2nd in Kata and Kumite; Joshua Carden 1st in Kata and Kumite; Isabella Howell 2nd in Kata and Kumite; Brian Smole 3rd in Kata and Kumite, 2nd in Randori; Quinton Smole 3rd in Kata and 2nd in Synchronized Kata; Daniel Smole 3rd in Kata and Kumite, 2nd in Synchronized Kata; Sean Whaler 2nd in Kata, 1st in Kumite; Charlie Hite 3rd in Kata and 2nd in Kumite; Tyler Eisentraut 2nd in Kata and Kumite; Anna Eisentraut 2nd in Kata and Kumite; Ryan Rorrer 3rd in Kumite; Braydon Mullens 1st in Kata and Kumite; Brianna Callahan 2nd in Kumite; Quin Shephard 2nd in Kata and 1st in Kumite; Adrianna Whitt 1st in Kata and Kumite; Zander Maher 1st in Kata and 2nd in Kumite; Sensei Christian Kuehm 2nd in Kata, 3rd in Kumite, and 1st in Weapons Kata.
