When we talk about ju-jitsu everyone has their own version about what it is and even how it is spelled. Let just say I don't want to go into the history because you can read different books on that. I just want people to understand that with using the right techniques of ju-jitsu you put your opponent in a position of off balancing and control from either a standing position or on the ground. Whether they are trying to punch you or grab you, you want to control them using joint locks and manipulations so that they are no longer a threat to you. What is nice about most of these techniques, you have a choice to cause as much pain as necessary to your opponent for them to submit. So you do not have to punch them in the face and cause structural damage in which you can get into a lot of trouble. This discipline give you an option of causing temporary pain so that you can leave a bad situation without going to court, or being expelled from school. We always need options when it comes to self defense whether we are striking (Karate), using controlling techniques (Ju-jitsu) or throwing (Judo). This is why at our dojo we teach our students all three of these Japanese disciplines
